Mars Exploration Rover Performance as a Baseline for Flight Rover Autonomy Technology Assessment
نویسندگان
چکیده
Technology assessments rely on performance metrics to establish a basis for rating technologies. Metrics are also used to measure relative merit of similar technologies to state-of-the-art technology. Functional performance metrics are presented for mobility and robotic arm autonomy exercised on the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) surface mission thus far. The metrics are used to apply an existing technology assessment method to establish a baseline for assessing future flight rover technologies. The methodology decomposes robotic activities into operational functions and addresses how technologies, based on performance metrics, can be systematically related to increases in science return. Considering the basic mission objective to maximize scientific yield, we can assess how relative performance of future technologies might impact science return. We provide a useful set of metrics and present an example application of the method to assess the merit of hypothetical future Mars rover performance relative to MER as a baseline.

Stereo Vision and Rover Navigation Software for Planetary Exploration
NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions will land twin rovers on the surface of Mars in 2004. These rovers will have the ability to navigate safely through unknown and potentially hazardous terrain, using autonomous passive stereo vision to detect potential terrain hazards before driving into them. Unfortunately, the computational power of currently available radiation hardened processors ...
متن کاملFIDO Rover System Enhancements for High-Fidelity Mission Simulations
The FIDO (Field Integrated Design & Operations) rover is an advanced mobility platform and research prototype for future Mars surface missions planned by NASA. It was used in a recent field trial aimed at realistic simulation of the 2003 NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) mission. This paper reports the key system enhancements made to improve the utility of the FIDO rover as a platform for high...
متن کاملAutonomous Rovers for Human Exploration of Mars
Autonomous rovers are a critical element for the success of human exploration of Mars. The robotic tasks required for human presence on Mars are beyond the ability of current rovers; these tasks include landing-site scouting and mining, as well as emplacement and maintenance of a habitat, fuel production facility, and power generator. These tasks are required before and also during human presen...
متن کاملAdvanced Robotics Technology Infusion to the Nasa Mars Exploration Rover (mer) Project
This paper presents four new technology developments and their infusion into the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. These technologies were not ready for infusion prior to the launch of this mission. Three of these new capabilities are designed to increase the level of autonomy for the operations, i.e., fewer ground-in-the-loop steps for executing commands. One of the new capabilities is des...
متن کاملAutonomous Rover Technology for Mars Sample Return
Planetary rovers enable good sample selection and retrieval for Mars sample return missions. After landing, the rovers search for the best possible scientific samples in the region around a lander, and they return these selected samples to an ascent vehicle that launches the samples into Mars orbit. To streamline the search for, the acquisition, and the retrieval of samples, rover autonomy is a...
